We are currently running an older (Jenkins ver. 1.638) version of Jenkins. It seems that when a job is deleted or renamed, the corresponding /workspace directory is not cleaned up leading to lots or "orphaned" workspaces.
It seems to be a known issue that has been fixed in newer versions of Jenkins (https://issues.jenkins-ci.org/browse/JENKINS-2111). For now, though, I'm simply going to manually remove a number of the orphaned workspaces to get back some disk space.
