There is nothing in the spec to describe this issue but I suspect we should do a check for font.candispalyglyph when we're parsing the text and if it's fail we fall back on font substution as we have a normal asscii code in this case.

As part of a lot of encoding work done for 5.1.2 this PDF now renders correctly. Marking as resolved,

The characters in question are using the octal codes \223 and \226. The TrueType font used to display these characters does not have cid-> gid mapping for the two values, only zero. The strange part is that all other characters used in the document correctly map to the proper glyph where the only difference is the fact that cid was specified in octal notation.
