The images in question use a Indexed colour mode that is generated using a ICCBased colour space. The colour generated using this profile are a little too dark when treated as a device Gray model. The alternate colour space of the ICCBased profile is CMYK and when applied generates a white image lacking the shadow definition. Further work needs to be done to figure out why the colour space isn't converting correctly.
